How to lock SafeSearch on Google

The setting Google won't let you lock yourself, and the ways that still work. Checked October 2026.

The short answer

Go to google.com/safesearch and choose Filter. Google won't let you lock that on your own adult account, so to make it stick, use a family DNS filter. Each one below forced SafeSearch on every Google search in our test: Private DNS family.cloudflare-dns.com on Android, Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 app in Families mode on iPhone, and 1.1.1.3 on a laptop or router.

Before you start

Google already blurs explicit images by default, but "Blur" still shows explicit text and links. This guide switches you to "Filter" and locks it so it can't be switched back in two taps.

Step 1: Switch from Blur to Filter (30 seconds)

  1. Open google.com/safesearch in any browser.
  2. Choose Filter.

If you're signed in to Google, the setting follows your account. That's the good news. The catch is that the same page switches it back in two taps.

Step 2: Lock it with a family DNS (the lock that works for adults)

Google keeps a list of who can lock SafeSearch. Parents and schools are on it. So is whoever runs your Wi-Fi or manages your device. Your own adult account isn't.

A family DNS gets you in through the Wi-Fi door. It quietly sends every Google search to Google's locked SafeSearch, and the setting on Google's page stops mattering.

Our test. On 16 October 2026 we checked which family filters force SafeSearch. Cloudflare for Families, CleanBrowsing and AdGuard all forced Google SafeSearch, and Bing's strict mode too. OpenDNS FamilyShield, the oldest name of the four, forced neither.

Step 3: Do the same for YouTube

SafeSearch doesn't touch YouTube. YouTube's version is called Restricted Mode, and you can switch it on in YouTube's settings. Google says it works per browser or device, so you'd have to turn it on everywhere you watch. It also switches off as easily as it switches on.

The stronger move is the DNS route again, with one catch from our test. Only AdGuard's family filter (family.adguard-dns.com, or 94.140.14.15 and 94.140.15.16 on a laptop or router) also forced YouTube into Restricted Mode. Cloudflare's and CleanBrowsing's adult filters left YouTube alone.

What this won't catch

  • Sites you type in yourself. SafeSearch cleans up search results. It doesn't stop you going straight to a site. A family DNS does both.
  • Other search engines. Bing and DuckDuckGo have their own safe modes. The three filters that locked Google in our test locked those two as well.
  • Reddit and X. Their search boxes aren't Google, and no family filter we tested blocked either site.

What a blocker can't do

A lot of bad nights don't start with a search for porn. They start with a search for something else, then an image, then another, until it's 2am and you're not sure how you got there. Filter mode cuts that chain early, and that's most of its value.

What it can't do is the next minute, when the urge is still there and the search didn't work. Urge surfing is built for that minute: you notice where the urge sits in your body and stay with it while it eases. That's also the minute Sherpa is built for. It's the app we're making, and it's a few weeks out.

Next time a search starts drifting somewhere you didn't plan, close the tab and stand up. Standing up counts.

Questions people ask

Can I lock SafeSearch on my own Google account?

No. Google only lets parents, schools, network owners and device managers lock it. A family DNS filter on your phone, laptop or router does the locking from outside Google.

What's the difference between SafeSearch Filter and Blur?

Blur hides explicit images behind a blur, and it's the default for adults. Filter removes explicit images, text and links from your results.

How do I lock SafeSearch on iPhone?

Install Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 app and turn on 1.1.1.1 for Families. It forces SafeSearch on every Google search, in every browser, on Wi-Fi and mobile data. Steps are in the iPhone guide.

How do I lock SafeSearch on Android?

Set Private DNS to family.cloudflare-dns.com. Steps are in the Android guide.

How do I lock SafeSearch in Chrome?

Use a family DNS on the laptop. Chrome keeps using it as long as you leave Chrome's own secure DNS setting on its default. Chrome also has a ForceGoogleSafeSearch policy for people comfortable editing policies.

Why won't SafeSearch turn off?

Something outside your account is locking it. Usually that's the Wi-Fi network you're on or a filter on your device. Google can also switch to Filter by itself if it thinks you might be under 18.
